Public Education and Racial Justice is organized in two integrated research teams. While the first studies the legacies of movement-built education models, the second examines CUNY’s past and present in relation to how students’ lives and educations are shaped by their experiences of race. Foregrounding students’ own stories and using a range of methods including film, art, and performance, this research group will seek to reimagine how public education can be used as a means of transforming the logics of racial injustice.       

The faculty coleaders for this research group are Grace M. Cho, Terrie Epstein, Rose M. Kim, and Debbie Sonu. The group's senior advisors are Jeanne Theoharis and Herman Bennett.

The CUNY Graduate Center PhD student fellows for the Seminar on Public Engagement and Collaborative Research are Daisy Atterbury, Karen Okigbo, Jules Salomone, Jaime Shearn Coan, Janet Werther, Diane Yoong, and Kasey Zapatka.
