About the Fellowship
WHAT:
In Spring 2018 and Fall 2019, Autoethnographies of CUNY will collaborate with College and Community Fellowship’s Theater for Social Change to develop an original theater piece about the role that public education has played in lives of members of the ensemble before and after incarceration.
WHO:
Autoethnographies of CUNY is an interdisciplinary research team led by Professors Grace Cho and Rose M. Kim, as part of the Mellon Seminar on Public Engagement and Collaborative Research. The project generates narratives of current and past CUNY students to highlight the richness and diversity of the nation’s first public university.
College and Community Fellowship’s Theater for Social Change is a performance ensemble of formerly incarcerated women that uses theater to raise awareness about the importance of increased access to education and the broader issue of criminal justice reform.
FELLOWSHIP DETAILS:
Together, we seek a CUNY MFA student or graduate student at the CUNY Graduate Center in the humanities or humanities-related social sciences to work closely with College and Community Fellowship’s Theater for Social Change to lead the ensemble members in writing and directing a theater piece reflecting on their life experiences. Successful applicants will demonstrate an interest in engaged scholarship. Applicants must be in good academic standing.
An informal reading of the piece will be presented at College and Community Fellowship’s graduation ceremony in June 2018, and a fully developed piece will be performed at the Graduate Center, CUNY in October 2018. Between 6 and 11 ensemble members are expected to participate.
COMPENSATION:
$4,000
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- 12 hours a month of work from February-October (with a reduction in hours over the summer)
- attend approximately 2 rehearsals on weeknights and Saturdays midday, which are 2-3 hours long and will take place 2-3 times per month at a time and location determined in part based on the successful applicant's availability
- develop two blog posts for the Center for the Humanities blog reflecting on the process
- provide logistical support to coordinate schedules for rehearsal and attendance sheets
