About the event
Music and vocalization have always played an important role in forging national identity, as well as gender identity through culture. How has this been changing in the Middle East and in Latin America particularly in relation to a new awareness of the rules governing vocal expression of women in public space? Join Alessandra Ciucci (Ethnomusicology, Northeastern), who has written on the musico-poetic practices of women in the Middle East and North Africa, and Licia Fiol-Matta (Latin American and Puerto Rican Studies, Lehman College) as they explore the culture of sound across the globe.
