Graduate Center, CUNY Public Humanities Fellow Elaine Sandoval returned from fieldwork on music in Venezuela and began her New York-based public humanities efforts just as the current economic, social, and political crises in Venezuela began to worsen. In collaboration with Venezuelan musicians, cultural managers, and organizations providing migrant aid, she has begun to support efforts to promote Venezuelan music both amongst the diaspora as well as for general New York City audiences. Most recently, she collaborated with musicians Angel and Luis Tolosa of the Toulouse Foundation to organize the International Harp Festival, held for the first time in NYC. In this event, Elaine reflects on her experiences, challenges, and successes in this endeavor, and also opens discussion about pursuing the public humanities as an ethnomusicologist, and with a needs-based focus in the context of crisis and migration.
