About the event
This collaborative workshop and dialogue will discuss June Jordan’s transformative contributions to Black Studies, literacies, poetics, and solidarity. While teaching at the City College of New York from 1967 to 1977, Jordan wrote such pivotal essays as “Black Studies: Bringing Back the Person” and “White English/Black English: The Politics of Translation,” experiences that would shape her later work at SUNY-Stony Brook and the UC-Berkeley Poetry for the People Program. We will read from Jordan’s various works, provide context on how they emerged, and speak to their relevance today.
