Join LaGuardia Community College’s Faculty and Staff of Color Collective (FSOC) for “Voices of the Unheard: The Afro Latinx Experiences” a panel discussion and film screening. Click here to register for this event and for access to the Zoom link.
This event will screen the documentary, “Latinegras: The Journey of Self-Love through an Afro Latina Lens” directed by Omilani Alarcon. The documentary provides a voice to the often underrepresented Afro Latina. It will address how "Notions of beauty and identity are challenged as the question of “who I am” is re-defined through the lens of a multi-generational cast of Afro Latina women." Upon viewing the documentary, Ms. Alarcon will provide short remarks discussing the documentary and join LAGCC faculty members Dr. Ryan Mann-Hamilton and Dr. Shaunee L. Wallace on a panel discussion regarding Dr. Mann-Hamilton’s experience and work as an Afro Latino cultural anthropologist and Dr. Wallace’s unique experiences of being an Afro Latina in the United States. The panel discussion will be moderated by LAGCC professor Dr. Sonia Rodriguez.
This event will provide information, raise awareness and consciousness about the underrepresented population of the Afro Latino community. Educators may be able to develop curriculum with content provided through the documentary and discussion. In addition, attendees may be able to identify with the documentary and experiences of the panelists. Overall, these are stories of human beings. The experiences of people who are descendants of the African diaspora, their goals, dreams and contributions to society. The session will also provide an interactive question and answer segment between the audience and participants.
This event is part of Transformative Learning in the Humanities' Spring 2021 series on active and participatory learning and is co-sponsored by Environment Community Humanities Oasis (ECHO) project led by Dr. Ryan Mann-Hamilton as part of the Mellon Seminar on Public Engagement and Collaborative Research from the Center for the Humanities at The Graduate Center, CUNY.
