The Center for the Humanities at CUNY Graduate Center is seeking a Presidential Research Fellow to assist in the creation, launch, and management of a new proposed Doctoral Certificate in Public Scholarship, and a suite of activities taking places under the auspices of The Public Scholarship Practice Space (PS2) housed at CUNY Center for Humanities.
PS2 at the Center for the Humanities builds on the strength of engaged research in the arts, humanities, digital humanities, social sciences, and sciences at CUNY Graduate Center, as well as the success of PublicsLab and the Seminar on Public Engagement and Collaborative Research, to facilitate both institutional and civic transformation through publicly engaged scholarship.
While the immediate need is the development and launch of the Public Scholarship certificate program, we also aim to explore four additional potential platforms: Graduate Education Transformation Grants; the Provost Summer Research Public Scholarship Fellowships; a Dissertation Innovation Lab; and Engagement & Public Programs.
This evolving position is ideal for a creative and collaboratively-minded individual with experience producing public scholarship and/or a desire to gain experience developing higher education systems that support the public good.
Job responsibilities
Working with the Faculty Coordinator, Dr. Prithi Kanakamedala, the Presidential Research Fellow will:
- Offer organizational assistance during the research, and planning stages of the certificate;
- Assist with managing the administrative and academic affairs of the Certificate Program;
- Assist with managing the budget and accounts payable;
- Coordinate activities with other administrative offices at CUNY Graduate Center and various stakeholders;
- Help develop and maintain the web presence for the Doctoral Certificate in Public Scholarship, including social media and a WordPress-based website;
- Assist with the planning, scheduling, publicity, and coordination, and attend in-person events such as the Certificate Program launch, Advisory Committee meetings, dissertation cohort gatherings etc.
- 15 hours of work a week; at least 5 hours in person at the Center for the Humanities.
Eligibility:
- CUNY Graduate Center Doctoral Students (if a current Graduate Center Fellow is chosen, their teaching or WAC service will be replaced with this position)
Preferred qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and background in a humanities field, or currently enrolled in a graduate program in a humanities or humanistic social science field (English, History, Anthropology, etc.)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Collaborative and collegial
- Comfortable working both independently and in teams
- Knowledge of social media platforms, e.g. Instagram
- Experience with WordPress and website creation
Compensation and benefits
- The Presidential Research Fellow: PS2 Coordinator Fellowship would require a total of 450 non-teaching hours during the academic year, capped at 15 hours per week.
- Compensation for the fellowship will be a minimum of $27,374 for the academic year, with a possibility for renewal.
- The Fellowship will be paid in two parts: Fellows will be appointed to the Graduate Center payroll as Graduate Assistant Bs (GAB) at $13,215 and also receive a Provost’s Award in the amount of $14,159 that will be paid through the Office of Financial Aid. Note, if a candidate has prior Grad B service at a higher salary step, the appointment would be at the candidate’s current Grad B salary rate.
- The GAB title provides eligibility to purchase the low-cost NYSHIP health insurance as well as in-state tuition remission for fellows who are within their first ten (10) registered semesters of doctoral study.
- Fellows who are past their ten registered semesters of doctoral study may be eligible to receive in-state tuition remission at the Level III rate as per the 2017-2023 PSC- CUNY contract (this benefit provides for this tuition remission for a maximum of four semesters past the student’s 10th registered semester).
