About the event
How do you understand the task of managing an artist’s estate? What is the balance between managing the materials and less-tangible elements like the artist’s persona or reputation? Join Keith Wilson, Director of the Graduate Center’s Center for the Humanities, and Lisa Le Feuvre, inaugural Executive Director of the Holt-Smithson Foundation, for an informal open conversation about the legacy of land artists Nancy Holt (1938–2014) and Robert Smithson (1938–73).
Founded in 2017, the Holt-Smithson Foundation is an artist endowed foundation that aims to continue the creative and investigative legacies of Holt and her husband, Robert Smithson, from its base in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Through public service their Foundation engages in programs developing the artists’ creative legacies, which includes a series of events focusing on Holt’s work (January 31–February 11, 2019) alongside Holt’s current exhibition at the Dia:Chelsea (ending March 9, 2019).
Prior to taking the helm of the foundation, Le Feuvre was head of sculpture studies at the Henry Moore Institute (2010–17), where she headed its research division and curated exhibitions. She has also curated for the quinquennial exhibition British Art Show (2009–10) and the National Maritime Museum (2005–09) and taught at Goldsmith’s College and the University of London. She has served on the juries for the Turner Prize (2018), the British representative of the Venice Biennial, and the Hepworth Prize for Sculpture.
This conversation will also be the soft opening for the exhibition ISO 6346: ineluctable immigrant by artist Ellen Rothenberg in the James Gallery.
