About the event
Join artist Nicholas Hlobo and curator Vicente Todoli in a conversation about Hlobo’s oeuvre. Hlobo’s process-oriented large-scale sculptures and drawings exude visceral sexuality and reference Xhosa culture and life in post-Apartheid South Africa. What is at stake in his practice amidst the complex cultural landscape of South Africa with its mix of living traditions and contemporary urban problems? Hlobo won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Visual Arts (2009) and his art has been shown at the Venice Biennial (2011), the Liverpool Biennial (2010), Tate Modern (2008-9), Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2008). A major retrospective of his work was held this year at the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo, Norway. Hlobo is a participant in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative program. Vicente Todoli was Director of the Tate Modern from 2002-2010 and was Director of Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto after holding the positions of Chief Curator and Artistic Director of IVAM (Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno).
