Join Nancy Y. Reynolds for a keynote lecture the evening before an all-day interdisciplinary workshop titled “Delimiting Egypt: Law, Land, and Bodies.” Reynolds will explore the contradiction in Egypt’s being defined—since antiquity—from its geographical center: the strip of cultivatable land along the Nile River. In fact, Egypt’s legal frontiers lie far from this arable strip in surrounding deserts. Egyptian, Ottoman, and colonial surveyors worked hard to define “fair and just” boundaries out of claims of ownership over tribes, wells, trees, watersheds, mountain passes, historical sites, and geomorphic landforms, predicated on novel understandings of ecology, geology, geography, and nature.
