Grace M. Cho (Ph.D. in Sociology at The Graduate Center, CUNY, 2005) shares insights into her memoir Tastes Like War, a 2021 National Book Award finalist, which “richly braids Korean meals, memories of a mother fighting racism and the onset of schizophrenia” (Vanity Fair). Part food memoir, part sociological investigation, the book is a hybrid text about a daughter’s search through intimate and global history to better understand her mother’s past. Cho, an associate professor of sociology and anthropology at the College of Staten Island, is also the author of Haunting the Korean Diaspora: Shame, Secrecy, and the Forgotten War. She joins in conversation with Patricia Clough, professor of sociology and women’s studies at The Graduate Center, CUNY and Queens College.
