About the event
Join us for a conversation between activists, artists and academics including Maria Heyaca, Rocio Silverio, Javiela Evangelista, Pablo Blanco, Aldo Resendiz, Nelli Moctezuma, Hector Zapata and Ryan Mann-Hamilton on current manifestations of and resistance to state violence across the Americas. This violence is not only the use of physical force, but also inflicted through the systematic violation of human rights and dehumanization of specific segments of the population. Three issues will be discussed: the State orchestrated disappearance of 43 students from a teachers college in Ayotzinapa, Mexico; the State sponsored land grabs and silent genocide of Hondura's Garifuna community; and the State enacted laws in the Dominican Republic that have denationalized Dominicans of Haitian descent and allowed authorized terror against black bodies. The conversation brings together attempts to organize around these issues through the use of multiple mediums and artistic exploration, and will feature report backs from visits and meetings with organizers on the ground.
