It is well known that Marx followed the progress of the American Civil War very closely and wrote about it in his dispatches for Horace Greeley’s New York Tribune, but few scholars have noted that those dispatches also coincide with the composition of Capital, Vol. 1 (1867). Join Eric Lott (American Studies, University of Virginia) as he investigates Marx's text as a way of thinking about state formation and political-economic revolution in the mid-nineteenth-century United States.
