About this CUNY Adjunct Incubator Project
As part of a research project supported by the CUNY Adjunct Incubator, science educator and artist Apeksha Mewani (Health and Human Performance at York College, CUNY) is developing the Public Health Informatics Careers Dashboard.
The Public Health Informatics Careers Dashboard project aims to support the creation of an innovative dashboard that offers career services and support for CUNY undergraduate and graduate students of public health disciplines. The pandemic has caused a major global recession as millions are being displaced and rendered unemployed. Amid all of this, the health education economy can be strengthened through a virtual platform for public health professionals to engage and have their urgent demands carefully assessed, voiced, conveyed, and eventually met.
Apeksha Mewani's CUNY students were transitioning mid-semester to fully online learning as the pandemic spread, and engaged in rich discussions about the implications of public health during COVID-19. The students willing to provide their services but did not have directions on how to engage or navigate this career trajectory. When the class returned to resume Fall’20 instruction, students shared voices of hope, optimism, and motivation, but continued to get a sense of ‘not knowing how to apply classroom learning to the real world’. Addressing this need can precipitate positive systems change with a special focus on the student experience. This dashboard (project) demonstrates a deep awareness of the reciprocal methods, ethics, and goals of community-oriented practices.
