Willie Tolliver is on the faculty of the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College in New York City. Dr. Tolliver teaches graduate level courses in social welfare policy, and is the lead professor for the Social Work Practice & Learning Lab. He is also on the Social Welfare Doctoral Faculty at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and he is former Director of the One Year Residence Program at Silberman. Dr. Tolliver is the newly appointed Director of Social Justice and Equity Education at Silberman School of Social Work.
Dr. Tolliver received the MSW from Columbia University, and the doctorate in Social Welfare from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He has been a social worker since 1976, and has served on the faculties of Florida A&M University Social Welfare Department, and the Boston University School of Social Work.
Dr. Tolliver is co-author with Steve Burghardt of Stories of Transformative Leadership in the Human Servicesa, a collection of inspirational leadership stories from ordinary private and public sector human services workers. He also co-author on an article for the Encyclopedia of Couples & Family Therapy titled, Decolonizing Couples and Family Therapy: Social Justice Praxis in Liberatory Healing Community Practice.
Professor Tolliver has served as principal investigator on projects in Nigeria to prepare lay people to provide services to children orphaned because of AIDS. In addition to his research interest in Nigeria, he has traveled in Ghana, and extensively in Senegal where his focus of study was the Mouride brotherhood, Islam’s mystical entrepreneurs.
