Sarah W. Freedman is professor of education, University of California, Berkeley. She has worked with teacher-researchers in urban, multicultural settings to investigate the teaching and learning of written language, as well as ways English is taught in schools. She is the author of Inside City Schools: Investigating Literacy in Multicultural Classrooms, and is an associate of the National Conference for Research in the Language Arts. She has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences and at the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Study and Conference Center. In recent years, she has added an emphasis on social studies, studying the role of education in reconstructing societies after genocide in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.
