​Renee M. Kingan

Renee M. Kingan is a Ph.D. candidate in American Studies at the College of William and Mary. She is also a jazz musician performer. Kingan earned her B.A. in English with minors in music and Secondary Education from James Madison University, and then an M.A. in English from George Mason University, as well as an M.A. in American Studies from William and Mary. Kingan teaches at the York County School of the Arts in Williamsburg, VA, and works as a freelance musician evenings specializing in woodwinds. Her scholarly research interests include African-American cultural studies and her dissertation topic is Jayne Cortez’s collaborations with the Firespitters band. Kingan’s recent publications include a piece in The Black Scholar, a chapter in Black Music, Black Poetry: Blues and Jazz's Impact on African American Versification, and a chapter in Feminist Superhero: Voice, Vision, Politics and Performance
 in the Poetics of Adrienne Rich and Jayne Cortez.
