Oxana Chi is an award-winning Afro-German choreographer, dancer, filmmaker, curator, and publisher. She is currently 2017-2018 Artist-in-Residence at Abrons Arts Center. As the Founder and Choreographer of Oxana Chi & Ensemble Xinren since 1991, she produced 18 feature-length productions including two commissioned works for Humboldt University, Berlin.
As a dancer-choreographer, she developed her own style: a transcultural fusion blending traditional and contemporary movement techniques from Europe, West Africa, Egypt, Indonesia, and China. Most of her current repertoire focuses on embodied archives, feminist narratives, memory, and empowerment. In New York, Oxana Chi has performed at NYU Jack Crystal Theater, CUNY BMCC, Dixon Place, MR@Judson Church, Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (BAAD!), LaMaMa, LAVA Dance, WOW Café Theatre, and University Settlement, among others. She has also performed at theaters, universities and festivals in France, Germany, India, Finland, Indonesia, Taiwan, Martinique, Turkey, Singapore, Australia, and the UK.
Oxana Chi is featured in several films and publications. She received the DOSHIMA 2016 Gold Award Filmmaker of Inspiration for her movie Dancing Through Gardens and was honored as an Ambassador of Peace for her art. “A somewhat delicate presence, she is, nevertheless, a woman writ large, claiming concert dance space for a diverse and teeming world, blessing that space” (Eva Yaa Asantewaa).
