Recently graduated from an MFA program at Queens College CUNY, Mia Karlberg Levin currently lives in a smallish coastal town on Long Island, where she desires to be a proponent of strong individual and communal identities. As a first generation American who grew up in the creatively rich County of Bucks in Pennsylvania, the opportunity to participate actively in the local tradition of handmade tile making enhanced her desired feeling for “connectedness”. The tile production methods applied at the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, which at times felt entirely anachronistic, also prompted thoughts about the origin of the traditions exemplified and the societal, economic, and environmental forces that shaped them. Hence the anachronism served a purpose.
