Max Symuleski is an artist and writer with a PhD in Computational Media, Arts, and Cultures from Duke University. Their recent dissertation, Maintenance Works: the Aesthetics and Politics of Collective Support, investigates the theme of maintenance in Post-WWII visual culture in the US against a backdrop of urban transformation, economic neo-liberalization, and the emerging climate crisis. Drawing heavily on the maintenance art of Mierle Laderman Ukeles, they argue that culture is maintenance work, and so we should do it. Max holds an MA in Historical Studies from the New School for Social Research and a BA in Art History and Visual Arts from Sara Lawrence College. They live in Durham, North Carolina.
