Martin Wong

Graffiti artist and painter Martin Wong (1946-1999, San Francisco) was raised in San Francisco’s Chinatown district before moving to New York in 1978. Although he became an integral figure in the East Village art scene, his practice was shaped by the formative years he spent in San Francisco at a pivotal time for both the gay community and the emergence of street art, experiences that influenced his diverse and deeply introspective artistic practice. Wong returned to San Francisco in 1994 after being diagnosed with AIDS, where he lived until his death in 1999. His Estate is administered by the PPOW Gallery in New York.
