Lari Pittman

Lari Pittman is a painter based in Los Angeles, California. Influenced by commercial advertising, folk art traditions, and diverse aesthetic styles, his meticulously layered paintings transform pattern and signage into complex scenes that interrogate issues of identity and hybridity, and are deeply inspired by the landscapes of contemporary politics and American culture. Pittman received his MFA from the California Institute of Arts in 1976, and has received many awards, including a Pacific Design Center Stars of Design Award, the Skowhegan Medal, and three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. He has had major exhibitions at Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston.
