Kristen Hackett is an activist, scholar, and educator working towards decolonized, anti-racist, and just urban futures in New York City. She is an executive committee member of the Justice For All Coalition (JFAC), a volunteer-based community group comprisedof neighbors advocating and organizing around just futures for all in western Queens. She is also a student and fellow at The Graduate Center, CUNY. As PhD Candidate in the environmental psychology program, Kristen’s dissertation is a historical excavationinto the creation and maintenance of the geography we call “Queens” from before European contact to today. The research relies on primary accounts of the various communities of inhabitants across time, and conceptually aims to identify the ongoing role of white supremacy and racial capitalism in land use and resource distribution decisions today (Learn more at https://recalibratingqueens.nyc).
Kristen has taught urban studies and
psychology courses at Queens College, The New School, and John Jay. She has published research studies and essays in Housing Studies, New Political Science, Shelterforce, City Limits and elsewhere focusing on topics including community land trusts, participatory budgeting, public housing, displacement, and local land use decisions and organizing efforts.
