Julie Skurski is Distinguished Lecturer in Anthropology at The Graduate Center, CUNY. She is co-editor of States of Violence (University of Michigan Press, 2006), and of Anthrohistory: Unsettling Knowledge, Questioning Discipline (University of Michigan Press, 2011), and the author of articles on nationalism, race, and gender in Latin America. She is completing the book manuscript, Civilizing Barbarism: Nationhood, Masculinity, and Mestizaje in Venezuela, and is conducting research on the relationship between secular and esoteric formations of national and collective identity, focusing on Freemasonry, racialization, and popular religiosity in Venezuela and Cuba.
