Joseph Henry

Joseph Henry is a PhD candidate in the Art History program at the CUNY Graduate Center, where his research focuses on Euro-American modernism. His dissertation argues for the prominence of the machine and industrial capitalism in structuring the work of the German Expressionist artists known as Die Brücke. His other interests include German art; the relationships between art and labor; primitivism; queer visual culture; and performance. His work has been supported with funding from the Mellon Foundation, the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst, and the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Museum. He has been a Helena Rubinstein Critical Studies Fellow at the Whitney Independent Study Program and a Scholar-in-Residence at the Robert Gore Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He is currently a Mellon-Marron Museum Research Consortium Fellow in the Department of Drawings and Prints at the Museum of Modern Art.
