Jonathan D. Sassi is Professor of History at the College of Staten Island, CUNY, and a faculty member of the Ph.D. Program in History at the CUNY Graduate Center. His publications include A Republic of Righteousness: The Public Christianity of the Post-Revolutionary New England Clergy (Oxford University Press, 2001) and several journal articles, book chapters, and reviews that explore the intersection of religion, politics, and reform in America between about 1740 and 1840; one recent example is a chapter on “Religion, Race, and the Founders” in Faith and the Founders of the American Republic, edited by Daniel L. Dreisbach and Mark David Hall (Oxford University Press, 2014). He is currently researching the decades-long antislavery campaign that resulted in New Jersey’s gradual emancipation act of 1804.
