Ginetta Candelario is Associate Professor of Sociology, Director of the Program in Latin American and Latina/o Studies and a faculty affiliate of the Study of Women and Gender Program at Smith College. Her research interests include Dominican communities and identity formations, race and ethnicity in the Americas, beauty culture, Latina/o communities and identity formations, museum studies, Latin American and Latina feminisms. Her first book, Black Behind the Ears: Dominican Identity From Museums to Beauty Shops was published by Duke University Press in 2007 and received the 2009 Best Book Award from the Latino Studies Section of the Latin American Studies Association and the 2008 Best Book Award from the New England Council of Latin American Studies. El Negro tras la oreja: Identidad dominicana desde el museo hasta el salon, the Spanish-language edition of BBE is forthcoming from the Academia Dominicana de Historia. Her edited volume, Miradas desencadenantes: Los estudios de género en la República Dominicana al inicio del tercer milenio, a collection of recent gender and women’s studies research in the Dominican Republic, was published in April of 2005. Her current research is on Dominican feminist thought and activism, 1880-1961, which she is developing into a book length study. She is also co-editing with April Mayes (Pomona College) and Elizabeth Manley (Xavier University) a two-volume primary documents collection for the Dominican Republic’s Archivo General de la Nación, Cien Años del feminismo dominicano, 1861-1961, forthcoming 2014.
