Emily Kay Berquist is a Los Angeles-based historian of the late Spanish Empire. She is currently enjoying two years of research leave at the Huntington Library in San Marino, Calif., where she is completing her first book, The Bishop’s Utopia: Imagining Improvement in Eighteenth-Century Peru (under contract with the University of Pennsylvania Press’s “Early Modern Americas” series, edited by Peter C. Mancall). She is also working on her second project, Early Antislavery Sentiment in the Spanish Empire, a portion of which appeared in the journal Slavery & Abolition in June 2010. A former Fulbright scholar, Dr. Berquist is presently on faculty at California State University at Long Beach.
