David Reynolds is a Distinguished Professor in the English Program at the CUNY Graduate Center. His book Beneath the American Renaissance: The Subversive Imagination in the Age of Emerson and Melville won the Christian Gauss Award for excellence in literary criticism. His other books include Walt Whitman’s America (winner of the Bancroft Prize and the Ambassador Book Award), John Brown, Abolitionist (winner of the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award), Mightier than the Sword: “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and the Battle for America (noted by The New Yorker and Kirkus among the best nonfiction books of the year), Waking Giant: America in the Age of Jackson (among Washington Post best books of the year), Walt Whitman, George Lippard, and Faith in Fiction: The Emergence of Religious Literature in America. Several of Reynolds's books have been listed among the Notable Books of the Year by the New York Times Book Review, for which he regularly writes. Reynolds, who is listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World, is also the editor or coeditor of seven books, including the forthcoming Norton Critical Edition of Lincoln's writings.
