Celso Castilho is an Assistant Professor of Latin American and Caribbean history at Vanderbilt University. He is currently preparing a book manuscript entitled, The Politics of Slave Emancipation in Pernambuco: Abolitionism, Race, and Citizenship in Northeastern Brazil, 1865-1893. His article, “Performing Abolitionism, Enacting Citizenship: The Social Construction of Political Rights in 1880s Recife, Brazil,” is forthcoming in the Hispanic American Historical Review. Most recently he co-organized a workshop entitled "Da Abolição à Emancipação: Raça, Gênero e Identidades," at the National Association Meeting of Brazilian History.
