Caroline L. Gillaspie

Caroline L. Gillaspie is a Doctoral Candidate in Art History at the CUNY Graduate Center specializing in art of the United States and Latin America. Her dissertation examines visual representations of environmental damage and racial injustice caused by the 19th-century Brazil-U.S. coffee trade, and traces the depictions of American coffee culture from plantation to cup through landscapes, cityscapes, and genre scenes. She has received fellowship support for her dissertation research from the Terra Foundation for American Art, the American Antiquarian Society, the Library Company of Philadelphia/Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, and the CUNY Graduate Center. Caroline has held research assistant positions at the Brooklyn Museum and New-York Historical Society, and currently teaches Art History courses at CUNY City Tech and Pratt Institute.
