Alfred E. Prettyman

Alfred Prettyman, together with the late Albert E. Blumberg, PhD, co-founded the Society for the Study of Africana Philosophy (formerly the Society for the Study of Black Philosophy) in 1976, which continues to convene in his NYC home. He was the originator and publisher of SSBP’s The Journal. At Harper & Row Publishers he was Executive Editor, Social & Behavioural Sciences, College Department, original Editor-Manager of J & J Harper Books, and Senior Editor, Trade. He later founded his own publishing house, Emerson Hall, specializing in trade non-fiction in the social and behavioural sciences and subsequently became the original Editor-Manager, New Press at McGraw Hill Publishers. He was Director, Public Affairs and Community Relations, NYC Department of Juvenile Justice; Director, Communications, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC); and Director, Public Relations, Union Theological Seminary, NY. He has served on many boards, including Hamilton College, and is currently Chair, Ophelia J. Berry Fund, dba Pathways to College. Author of numerous articles and editor of National Civics in a Mosaic Democracy, rev. ed. (McGraw-Hill, 1997) and U.S., The Intercultural Nation, 2^nded. (McGraw-Hill, 1999), Prettyman was a W.E.B. Du Bois Lecturer, Humboldt University, Berlin and an invited speaker at Opole University, Poland. He has taught at Rutgers University, SUNY Orange, SUNY Rockland and now Ramapo College of New Jersey and continues to lecture widely.
