The Graduate Center (GC) benefits from highly ambitious and diverse students and alumni—who in turn teach hundreds of thousands of undergraduates every year. Through its public programs, the Graduate Center enhances New York City’s intellectual and cultural life. The GC seeks a Research Associate for the Center for the Humanities who will report to the Executive Director. Note: The role is funded from a Wellcome Trust grant and will be required in addition to report directly to members of the Wellcome Culture and Society Directorate team by arrangement. This position will be referred to locally as The Wellcome Mental Health Curatorial Research Fellow and the successful candidate will be required to take a multidisciplinary approach to their research and curatorial work on mental health in New York City, a timely issue that the Wellcome will be seeking to highlight through imaginative co-production in several world cities. The fellow’s primary role in this regard will be as curatorial connector for Wellcome in New York. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Develops external partnerships across the city with partner organizations on the theme of mental health in New York City investigating potential archives, collections and institutions that could provide a focus for transdisciplinary research. - Develops research plans and proposals; conducts archival
research, develops concept documents, writes summarizing texts and
progress reports as well as develops programming and educational
outreach initiatives. - Assists in developing interdisciplinary methods and processes between and across the Arts and Sciences on a mental health theme including researching and applies for grants and developing the Center’s existing relationships with funders. - Explores crossover and hybrid experimental curatorial possibilities utilizing original creative work, events, and public programming and works on related research projects with graduate students. - Serves as connector across participant spaces and places, developing creative new links with international city partners as the project develops including making related contributions to the Center’s social media presence. - Conducts academic research associated with the Center’s Arts and Science work; assists faculty, staff, and students in conducting research associated with this aspect of the Center's work. - Contributes to the intellectual life of the Graduate Center by arranging lectures and conferences on the Center's arts and sciences work including convening a workshop in 2020 at the GC for Wellcome Trust staff and project stakeholders on a global mental health theme with a specific New York City focus. - Adheres to standards for safety, hygiene, and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties. - Performes other research related duties as assigned. | |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability. | |
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

A preferred candidate should have: - Familiarity with Wellcome’s mission and practices and capability to initiate and spearhead innovative models of cultural production. - Experience of working on interdisciplinary themed exhibitions exploring complex global issues through local collaboration. - A proven record of collaborating with institutional partners, exhibition designers, and artists from inception to delivery stages. - Strong research, analytical, and critical thinking skills, including sound judgment and decision-making skills, and the ability to identify problems and recommend strategic solutions. - An understanding of and ideally experience in a range of research methods including interviews, archival research, and cultural geography. - Excellent project management skills, with the ability to multi-task and to meet deadlines. - Ability to organize and execute exhibitions and events. - Ability to work Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. - Ability to work occasional weekends and/or evenings. | |
