Do the terms "student" and "teacher" have different meanings in anti-institutional education than in traditional pedagogical contexts? How is knowledge identified and exchanged in these collaborative contexts, where authority is unhitched from expertise? We will use two texts as points of departure: Jacques Ranciere's introduction to The Ignorant Schoolmaster, and Jason E. Smith's essay on Ranciere, "The Master in his Place." We will combine a close reading of these texts with more open-ended discussion of whether and how notions of ignorance, mastery, knowledge and authority apply to our own experiences of horizontal pedagogy.

Nova Benway is a member of the volunteer organizing committee for The Public School, New York. In 2007, The Public School was initiated in Los Angeles in the basement of Telic Arts Exchange. The Public School is a school with no curriculum. It is not accredited, it does not give out degrees, and it has no affiliation with the public school system. It is a framework that supports autodidactic activities. Current locations include the Bay Area, Berlin, Brussels, Calgary, Durham, Helsinki, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, and San Juan.
