About the event

The essay, a term derived from the French infinitive essayer, or to attempt, was first used in the sixteenth century by Michel de Montaigne to describe the translation of private thoughts into writing. Nearly five hundred years later, the essay form remains a dynamic medium for contemporary writers. What makes it so? Join noted essayist Phillip Lopate in conversation with cultural critic Margo Jefferson as they discuss shifts in contemporary writing and culture. The conversation will be moderated by writer Shifra Sharlin.
