Professor Christina Greer (Political Science, Fordham University) will lead a discussion centered around her recent book Black Ethnics: Race, Immigration & the Pursuit of the American Dream (Oxford 2013) with Professor Reuel Rogers (Political Science, Northwestern University), Professor Niambi Carter (Political Science, Temple University) and Professor Cory Gooding (Political Science, Bowdoin College).
A recent study by the Pew Research Center (April, 2015) found that 3.8 million black immigrants resided in the United States in 2013. According to the New York Times reporter Jess Bidgood “The number of black immigrants has more than quadrupled since 1980…and that group is expected to make up an increasing share of the nation’s black population in the decades ahead.” (NYT, April 9, 2015) The growth of black but especially African immigrants who numbered 1.4 million between 2010 and 2013 underscores a renewed vibrancy of black ethnicity in American culture. The participants in the Caribbean Epistemologies Seminar are convinced that a conversation about race, ethnicity and the social sciences represents a timely intervention.
