About the event
How does performance enable the trauma of history to be remembered and overcome? Inspired by the 90th anniversary of the Fire of Izmir, Aktina Stathaki’s Abandon the Citizens highlights a fascinating and little-known part of modern history: the tragic end of the Greco-Turkish war, including the expulsion of the Greek population from the Asia Minor coast and the destruction of one of the most cosmopolitan cities of the time. Using rare archival material, this solo performance brings the powerful, poetic language of the survivors to the stage.
